lyric of the day #6 – the Friday song
“We’re gonna lay around the shanty mama, and put a good buzz on”
“The Shanty Song” – Jonathon Edwards
There was, and still may be a radio station around here that plays an edited version of this song every Friday afternoon at 5, to get the weekend started. The video sucks, because there wasn’t a real one ever made, but the song is perfect for starting off the weekend or a vacation.
lyric of the day #5
“Well I’m a happy boy, a happy boy
Oh ain’t it good when things are going your way – hey hey!”
“The Happy Boy Song” – The Beat Farmers
Just a stupid, silly, funny song from a really good band – ENJOY
are you kidding me #2
OK, we live and work in NASCAR country, and we see firsthand the passion NASCAR fans have for their sport. And yes, NASCAR is not as interesting to me since Dale Earnhardt died in the Daytona 500. But damn, I’m not from here and I just don’t get this!!!
If you knew this guy wouldn’t you have made him keep going once he carved the 3 into his back hair, thinking he was just kidding? And ladies, if you were his wife or girlfriend would you really have let him out of the house? Or once he was out of the house, let him take his shirt off? And if you’re the person or people sitting BEHIND this guy wouldn’t you feel compelled to make him put his shirt back on, or try and move your seat, or throw up, or leave?
So holytaco.com is running a caption this photo contest for NASCAR fans, you can play here.
Photos – Long Bay Inlet
On the way from Calabash to Sunset Beach in North Carolina, the one road in crosses over part of the Long Bay Inlet. Keep following the inlet east and you’ll end up in some golf communities (Oyster Bay and Sea Trail Plantation). Follow it west, and if you know where you’re going you can end up headed out into the Atlantic. If you don’t know where you’re going you’ll end up either grounded in the mud in the marsh, or cruising down the waterfront in Little River SC, on your way to North Myrtle Beach and points south on the Intracoastal waterway.
During the drive from home to the shore there are 2 mileposts for me. The first is Darlington Raceway in Darlington SC. Not because I’m a big NASCAR fan, but because passing that track is about halfway between homes, and it’s the place where my mind shifts from working to relaxing. The second is this inlet. If it’s late afternoon on a clear day the view is at least this good, usually better. If there’s no breeze and it’s just about between tides there’s no current and the water is like a mirror. There’s few homes and little traffic, so I almost always stop for a few minutes and sit on the guardrail overlooking the edge, just taking in the view and looking for the first birds of the trip. The tang of the breeze from the marsh, the silence, the inlet, and the luxury of just being able to sit and take it all in for a few minutes is the perfect way to start decompressing, whether it’s for a few days, or a few weeks.
I have many different shots of this same view of the inlet, but this one is my favorite. I think it’s the late winter angle of the light, I’m not sure. Anyway…
Photos – The Shrimp Shack
We spend a lot of time down the shore (at the beach for my southern family and friends), specifically the southern end of the Brunswick Islands in NC. The shrimp boats and fishing party boats dock just off the intracoastal waterway. As soon as they tie up they sell some of the catch right on the dock. So twice a day people line up to get the freshest of the fresh seafood. This shack sits on the dock just across the state line in Little River SC.
The Anti-Bill O
The New Yorker has an excellent portrait of MSNBC’s Keith Olberman. Olberman’s show “Countdown” has developed as a reality based news show that counters the bloviation emanating from Fox News’ biggest gasbag Bill O’Reilly. Agree or disagree with him, Olberman will tell you what he thinks, and his leftward perspective just really pisses off BillO, Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Ingraham (whom he dated at one point), Coulter, Malkin, and all the rest of the far right yakkers. I don’t think anyone scares him, and his Special Comments are becoming one of my favorite collections.
lyric of the day #4
Singin: dont worry bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry (dont worry) bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!
“Three Little Birds” – Bob Marley
Long before everyone heard this in “I am Legend“, Bob Marley was preaching revolution and peace through music. I’ve owned this song, and the landmark album it comes on – “Exodus“ - on vinyl, eight track, cassette, CD, and MP3. You really should have a copy.
lyric of the day #3 – Father’s Day
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
“When you coming home, dad?” “I don’t know when,
But we’ll get together then.
You know we’ll have a good time then.”
“Cat’s in the Cradle” – Harry Chapin
Really you need to listen to the whole song. But there should be a class for guys who want to be fathers, and they should play this song in every single session. I tried to keep it in mind as my sons grew up, I’m not sure how well I did. Time will tell.
